Wisconsinites who root for the Cubs

I don’t get it.

There is a large contingent of Wisconsin residents that loves the Chicago Cubs. The only way this is understandable and acceptable is if those individuals are Illinois transplants. If they’re not, then they have no business cheering for the Cubs. Their allegiance should belong to the Brewers.

For years and years, I’ve heard Milwaukeeans say they’re Cub fans because, and this is incredibly stupid, they feel sorry for those perennial losers. Do you think Chicagoans rooted for the Packers from the 70’s to the early 90’s because they were sympathetic to our horrible teams? Nah, they still hated us!

I should have plugged for the Cubs for the past few decades because they stunk?!! No way! I’d rather root for the Russians than the Cubs or the ************* Bears.

If you live in the land of beer and cheese, and weren’t born in the Land of Lincoln, and you like the Cubs, you need serious help because that’s just plain dumb.

Kevin,

As you know I would rather die than cheer for anyone but the Brewers but I get why some Wisconsinites cheer for the Cubs.  Back in the day before the Brewers were on FSN every night (and by the way let's give some love to FSN for showing all the Brewers games now if they would just show more UW Men's Hockey) the Cubs were on WGN every day during the summer.  Growing up before they had lights at Wrigley you could always count on Harry Carey being on at about 1pm on WGN and watching the Cubs with Ryan Sandberg, Shawn Dunston, and Rick Sutcliff.  Even I, a die hard Brewers fan since birth, watched those games.  And that was of course before the Brewers switched to the National League so we felt it was okay to cheer for the Cubs because if they won or lost it did not effect our American League Brewers.

So while I now dislike the Cubs and their fans with the fire of a thousand suns I understand why some Wisconsinites cheer for them.

Fischerfan nailed it.  Prior to interleague play (which preceded the move to the NL by a year), the only realistic chance of the Brewers and Cubs meeting was in spring training with the games not counting.

Indeed, I have a fond memory of that first interleague series with the Cubs.  That was the only time Harry Caray did not say "Root, root root for the Cubbies," while in Wrigley Field.
