Happiness is a homegrown tomato

It sure took long enough. I planted earlier than other years, and my tomato plants looked great. Yet those green tomatoes just would not ripen!

I suspect cool night temperatures are to blame--tomatoes need it warm at night to ripen properly.

But today, TODAY, I found 2 ripe Lemon Boy tomatoes out in my garden they became my first tomato mayo sandwich of the season. The Mortgage Lifter looks like it will be next.

Now I can say I broke even on that plant. If I would have bought 2 yellow tomatoes at the store today, they would have probabaly equalled the plant purchase price. All the rest I harvest from this point forward will be free!

How is your garden growing?

Hi Kyle, I do square foot gardening. Two raised gardens with special soil to permit a more concentrated type of gardening. Easy to weed, just sit on the edge and reach in and weed when necessary. I grow my cucumbers vertically on a trellus.

I planted late this year, middle of June. Really slow start. We harvested two tomatoes yesterday. Cucumbers will be hearty this week, at least 10 to 15 and lots coming. 3 years ago we harvested 290 cucumbers from a vine area of 4' x 6'. The neighbor kids had a great time coming over and sharing the crop. This will happen again this year. 6 different varieties of tomatoes, with fair amount of sets maturing. They are slow this year but doing OK, the cherry tomatoes are really abundant .

Peppers are just doing OK, Planted shallots really late also but are doing well. I will have to leave them in late. Bought the sets at Steins on close out a few weeks ago. Second crop of lettuce doing OK.

Our flower garden is doing ok with two different varieties of an Angel Trumpet. All the plants we bought from Milagers in Racine are dying for some reason. Those from Shady Lane are doing great. No idea why their dying . I really enjoy my square foot type garden. We have had them now for over 20 years I try to end my day by spending time with the garden. Great hobby.
