Maple & Main

Curt is Chicago native – but don’t hold that against him. After stops in Madison and California, he and his wife moved to Waukesha in 2004 to open their own downtown business.

A Sign of the Times

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

What “thousand words” come to mind when you see this?

I have a few, but I hardly find them print-worthy.

Its bad enough our “Welcome to Waukesha” sign sits in blight at the gateway to our city, but to add insult to injury, a “Spooka Minooka” banner has now been placed directly in front of it.

Is the County Park System, who sponsors the Spooka Minooka Festival, trying to do Waukesha a favor by blocking our decrepit sign from the sight of visitors? Or didn’t they notice the dilapidated woodpile when they were installing their banner?

It’s kind of humiliating.

What sort of message are we trying to send to visitors, tourists, or future businesses when they arrive into Waukesha and pass this rickety old sign?

Perhaps we should place another sign behind it reading, “Next U-turn 500 feet ahead”. At least that would give visitors the assumption that someone in Waukesha cares. But wait- that might block the red 2x4 that reads “Birthplace of Les Paul”.

C’mon Waukesha, we can do better than this.

As downtown Waukesha continues to promote its new image of being an “exciting urban destination”, the entrance to our city says something completely different.

An old plywood sign with broken badges and shabby landscaping is enough to make anyone think twice about making Waukesha their home, their place of business, or their “urban destination”.

This is the 36th “best city” to live in. Can we make it look the part?
