Summer Library Reading Clubs Begin June 16

The Summer “Catch the Reading Bug” Reading Club will begin on Monday, June 16th. Children may register any time during regular library hours beginning on June 16th.  Children of any age may join the club and record titles read to them, titles they read on their own or time spent reading.  Receive prize coupons after first 10 titles or three hours and 20 minutes of reading.  Enter drawing for more prizes after each additional 10 titles or three hours and 20 minutes of reading.  All reading must be completed and reported by 5 p.m. on August 22nd to be eligible for the prize drawing.

 

The Library is also offering a Summer Reading Program for Adults (and Young Adults -- age 16 and over).  Participants are asked to read at least 3 fiction books between June 16 and August 22, and then fill out reading records for the books they've read.  Completed reading records will be entered into a prize drawing at the end of the program.  Sign up for the Adult Summer Reading Program also begins June 16.

Summer Book Discussion Groups for Children

The Greendale Public Library will host book discussion groups for children this summer.  The Book Buddies group is for students entering 2nd and 3rd Levels in Fall, 2008 and the Lunch Bunch group is for students entering 4th, 5th and 6th Levels in Fall, 2008.

 

The Book Buddies (grades 2 & 3) will meet for three weekly sessions on Mondays or Thursdays, June 16th – July 3rd, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. to discuss Judith Greenburg’s In the Garden (Andrew Lost Series #4).  Each participant will receive a paperback copy of the book.  In addition to the discussion there will be craft and game activities.   Bring your own lunch.  Beverage will be provided.  Mary Helen Block, Circulation and Technical Services Librarian will be the discussion leader.

 

Students entering 4th, 5th and 6th grade are invited to join the Lunch Bunch.  The group meets every third Thursday (June 19 – James and the Giant Peach, July 10 – Loser, July 31 – Gossamer and August 21 – Group will choose title) from 12:30 until 1:30.  Read the book prior to the discussion.  Request a library book or purchase your own copy (discount provided at Once Upon a Time Bookshop). Bring your own lunch.   Beverage will be provided.  Register for one, two, three or four sessions.  Lesley Connor, Once Upon a Time, The Village Bookshop will be discussion leader.

"Catch the Reading Bug" will be the theme for the summer library program at the Greendale Public Library, 5647 Broad Street.  The program will run from June 16th through August 22nd.  The program includes storytimes for ages 3 - 6.  The "Spin a Tale Storytimes" (June 18th- July 24) will feature stories, songs, rhymes and crafts about beetles, bugs, butterflies, bees and creepy crawlers.  The six weekly sessions will be held on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m., Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. or Thursdays at 11:00 a.m.  Caregivers may choose to attend/not attend, but are asked to remain in the building.

Ignaszak May 10, 2008 1:30 p.m.  A Program of Quilts, Music and Art that will illuminates one man’s journey into artistic expression.  A slide show, live music, prerecorded music, and a trunk show of modern and antique quilts will demonstrate the meaning of “inspiration” and its sources in our daily lives. Greendale Public Library Hosts Greendale Public Schools Visual Art Display

The Greendale Public Schools will be celebrating “March—Youth Art Month” with an Art Display at the Greendale Public Library, 5647 Broad Street.  The visual art may be viewed from March 1st through March 31st during regular library hours.  Refreshments will be available for the public on Monday, March 3rd.  The display will feature student art from each of the public schools.

Please note that any DVDs not on the shelves when you visit the library can be placed on hold for you.  Holds can be placed from home, in the library, or by seeing the librarian at the Information Desk.  New DVDs are shelved above the main collection and circulate for three days with no renewal and no grace period.  Older DVDs circulate for seven days with a three day grace period on fines.

Get "Wired" at the Library

Confounded by computers? The Greendale Public Library is here to help. Attend one of our “I’m Wired” computer classes in October. Classes are designed for beginners and include the following topics – Computer Basics, Email, and Internet.

Do you find the Library’s online catalog confusing? We are also offering CountyCat Basics courses on October 22 and 24. You’ll be surfing like a pro in no time!

There is a nominal fee for each course. Contact the Library at 423-2136 for additional information, or call the Greendale Recreation Department at 423-2790 to register.

Classes are offered through a cooperative program with the Greendale Public Library, the Library Foundation, Greendale School District and the Greendale Park and Recreation Department.

Greendale Public Library Foundation to Sponsor Wine Tasting Event

The Greendale Public Library Foundation and Friends of the Library will sponsor the third annual wine-tasting fundraiser, "Wine-ing Down Summer," on Saturday, September 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Greendale Public Library, 5647 Broad Street.

The cost is $25 per person for advance tickets, $30 at the door. Also available are "designated driver" tickets at $10. Tickets will be on sale soon at the Library and at Chuckie's House of Wines in Franklin, who will supply the wine for the event. New this year, Chuckie's will be adding a beer-tasting table. The event features an excellent selection of wines and beers along with appetizers, live music and a Silent Auction.

Proceeds from this event go to The Greendale Public Library Foundation (GPFL), a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of the Greendale Public Library. The GPLF and Friends of the Library, in cooperation with the Library staff, provide programs for community youth such as the Summer Reading Programs. GPLF supports these efforts through the annual membership drive, and various fundraising efforts throughout the year including this Wine Tasting and the semi-annual pre-owned book sales for the benefit of the Library.

We are looking for auction items of new merchandise, gift certificates, services or monetary contributions. The names of all contributors will be placed on an auction board at the event and at the library entrance following the event. Please remember that all donations are fully tax deductible.
