In the Race

Now, here, you see, it takes all the blogging I can do to keep in the same place.
If I want to get somewhere else, I must blog twice as fast as that!

This May Be My Last Boomgaard Post (Maybe)

By Janet Evans

I’m feeling pretty confident that this may be my last Boomgaard post.

Before you know it that 120 days will be up and the Franklin-Oak Creek Joint Steering Committee and Zizzo group will have some grand plan where citizens will be involved to help name the 27th Street Corridor.

I can't wait!  Can you?

It will be an exciting time.

Today I received a very nice phone call from Steering Committee Chairperson, Ted Grintjes.  He wanted to thank me for testing out the new comments section on the 27th Street Website.  He said they will be working out the kinks on the site and trying to make it better.  I was glad to help!

In the meantime, I drive up and down the 27th Street Corridor, parts of it anyway, four times a day.

I wonder how often Mayor Taylor takes a look at the 27th Street Corridor?

I have a little game for you on this Friday night.

It's called Getting to know your 27th Street Corridor...

I'm sure it will be easy for some of you.

Guess where this picture was taken in the Boomgaard District/27th Street Corridor?

I would have taken the signs down, but only the owner or city officials are allowed to do that.

Election is over.......

So what’s your guess?

This is an easy one, Janet.....This is outside that out-of-business Mexican restaurant on 27th Street, near Drexel, I do believe.

I believe Mark is correct. I noticed the sign too just this afternoon as I was looking at how torn up the parking lot was. Likely in preparation for the widening of Drexel Avenue west of 27TH Street. Can't wait for those roundabouts... that whole bulding will be gone.

Oh...I'm no good at waiting on games like this!

And you guys are too good.

You know your 27th Street Corridor. Don't you?

Remember years ago when this was called Cesar's or something like that?  It had a bar and pool tables in it?

But you are correct...it is on 27th and Drexel...next to Northwestern Mutual....Is a Plan Commissioner a City official?  Hey, Pete..return your favor...take down those signs for Mayor Taylor....

Was there a prize for that round of "Boomgaard Bingo".

I certainly remember Cesar's, they also served food. Back in the 19XX's when I was dating my wife we used to spend many a 2:00AM in one of those booths in the side room next to the bar. Either there or eating roast turkey with bright yellow gravy at the Ryan Road Truck Stop. That was before I discovered Taco Bell.

Ick...bright yellow gravy?

Back in the 19XX's there werer some great restaurants around...but I guess at 2:00AM they weren't open.  Do you remember Barnaby's down north of the 27th St. Corridor?  Near Chancery?  I think it's a Kindecare now.  But it had pizza, burgers and beer?

Anyway...the "prize" goes to Mark.  I will be that he won't have to look at those election signs anymore... Maybe Mayor Taylor will take a trip through the Boomgaard District.

Oh yeah, I remember Barnaby's also. It was across from Target. I believe the building was torn down and I think it was replaced by either the daycare center or that auto dealer, J.C. Byrider?? There also was an old two story school building originally around there (right on the corner) if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if it was Barnaby's or the school that was on that site, but I know Barnaby's was in that area across from Target.

Someday I'll have to tell you about my method of getting a complete Barnaby's pitcher and mug set of my very own.

Ceasar's had  some decent pizza way back when. As long were talking about past 27th street eatery's, How about Red Barn, Arthur Treachers, Rustler, Ma's, Scotty's, or the old smorgasbord place (I think it was called Sweden House). I remember stopping at those places usually when the family went shopping at Treasure Island.

Scott,

Do you know there is still one Barnaby's left...not too far from here, in Des Plaines IL

Here's a link...remember that stained glass sign?:

Barnaby's

Can't wait to hear your story!

Clem...

I miss Arther Treacher's!  Why did they close that?  And I hate to say it...remember Der Wienerschnitzel on 76th and Morgan area?

Treasure island?  That was a long time ago.

O.K....now I'm hungry..fondue, please!

Sad to say, I remember every single one of those places... Arthur Treachers... great place; I loved the fish and chips in the cardboard cup thing with the vinegar. There was also one on 76TH Street just south of Layton where Breadsmith is now (or used to be).

And who could forget the squiggly roof at Treasure Island. Eventually they were bought by J. C. Penney.

How about Moreway (on Layton near 6TH Street), U-Tell (108TH Street between Grange and Edgerton) and Robert Hall (27TH and Drexel - before the Cowboy Store ... an original Boomgaarder (and I believe there also was a Robert Hall on Highway 100 in Hales Corners).

And wasn't there an Atlantic Mills store on 27TH between Grange and Ramsey next to the old Harris Lumber Yard.

Barnaby's in Des Plaines you say... My main clients office is in Des Plaines so I'm going to check out that Barnaby's the next time I'm down there. My favorite restaurant in Des Plaines is The RAM Restaurant and Brewery. We usually go there for lunch. The RAM would be a great fit for Franklin.

Scott,

Did you ever eat at Hackney's while in Illinois?  It's been a long time, but that place was always really good.   I lived down there for a year a long, long time ago.
They had good burgers and the best onion strings.
