Death Is Not Skin Deep

Killing Embryos Is Unnecessary

Those who advocate publicly funded embryonic stem cell research have been saying all along that it is a matter between sickness and health or life and death.

If you opposed  this type of research, no matter for what grounds, whether it be for moral reasons, financial reasons, or even practical reasons, you were thought of as being heartless.

Now, everything has changed in a heartbeat since teams of scientists from Japan and our state of Wisconsin revealed they can replicate embryonic stem cells without creating and killing human embryos.

Instead, the researchers used ADULT SKIN CELLS.

Just think what this means, in so many ways!

Scientifically, medically, POLITICALLY!

This changes EVERYTHING!

Read the article here from the Washington Post

"To date, adult stem cell research has produced about 70 treatments while embryonic research has yet to produce even one treatment, or even a human trial. "

"This week's announcement is a major breakthrough because it opens the gates to the vaunted potential of embryonic cells in a manner a Harvard researcher described as "ethically uncomplicated."
Six years ago, President Bush made the decision to open, for the first time, the laboratory doors to federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. He determined, however, that federal funds should not be used to encourage or support the destruction of living human embryos, a principle that has been part of federal law since 1996. Funds would be made available for research derived from embryos that had already been destroyed. He placed no limits on private funding of research. The president's policy is working Federal funding for embryonic stem cell research has grown from zero dollars in 2001 to over $24.8 million now, with no cap on future funding. Most of the established U.S. scientists in this field have received funding, and shipments of stem-cell lines are going out to researchers in record numbers. More  lines are available in the USA than in any other country.

What say you now, liberals?

Embryonic stem cell research NO LONGER NEEDED?

The ethical form of research is WORKING!

From SKIN CELLS!

Why ..... maybe I'm not even going to become "unglued" today....Oh, wait.... I'm sure there will still be liberals thumbing  their noses at the Bush administration for refusing to fund embryonic-stem-cell research on moral grounds.  And that, will make me "unglued."

So, what do you think?

Finally, is right.  No more Michael J. Fox propaganda.

I'm with you, J-RDR!

And, with all respect to Christopher Reeve and the struggles he had, and the late President Ronald Reagan, whom I greatly respected, the "propaganda" has been just too much the past few years.  Throwing around the GUILT on people.  Science just had to be given a chance.

Nothing would have helped Christopher Reeve.

Michael J. Fox, either.

President Reagan?  He was ill already during his presidency.  Nancy ... it was OK for you to hide it then, wasn't it?  Then later, Bush is the criminal.  Same with you Ron, jr.

Once again, great post, Janet.

Although I'm pro-life, let's not get ahead of ourselves quite yet on this new research development.  The development of this research is still in it's infant stages to say the least.  I know it's great bulletin board material (every Republican talking head is going to be carrying on about this today) but no one has determined that adult skin cells are any more or less effective in treating disease than embryonic stem cells.  It's definately a great development in stem cell research but let's see how this thing plays out before saying skins cells are the longer lasting lightbulb.

Infant stages, Josh?  Maybe so, compared to embryonic stem cell research.  But look at the statistics so far. Just this one qquote alone:

"To date, adult stem cell research has produced about 70 treatments while embryonic research has yet to produce even one treatment, or even a human trial. "

Good things are on the horizon for the use of adult skin cells.

Hopefully I agree.  I just don't feel this research needs to be politicized at this point.  This finding has all the signs of being used as political amunition rather than focusing on it's scientific relavance to stem cell research in general.  Just an observation.

Interesting perspective, Josh.

Why tout a breakthrough for "the bad guys!"

You really think every Republican talking head will be ranting about this today?  Maybe ....  But far less than the Dem's would probably have done.

Actually , here is what one Republican has said.  Excuse the  "UC" word in the quote, can't help that:

Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., an advocate of embryonic-stem-cell research, said, "My own view is that science ought to be unfettered and that every possible alternative ought to be explored." But the science is unfettered.

Interesting.

Glad to see Specter is viewing this from a scientific perspective.  Good for him!  Not sure who you are refering to when you say "bad guys".

Sorry about that Josh . . . That was unclear.

What I was saying was, "the bad guys,"  those that side with Bush and his federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, are expected to just lay low after being demonized all this time?

I guess maybe strategically, that might not be a bad thing to do.  And Bush has been pretty quiet about it himself.
