Last Saturday, 21 Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 2522 traveled to the UW-Madison campus for a day-long program where they learned about many different facets of engineering and earned three science badges! The girls were welcomed by several different groups of women studying to become engineers at the school, and they told the girls about why they chose to go into the engineering field, and the perks of being a woman in a male-dominated career! In addition, many of the students talked to the girls about their personal Girl Scout experience! Many of them are life-long Girl Scouts, and even belong to a campus Girl Scout program, providing Madison area Girl Scouts with special programming and support!
After hearing from these student engineers, the fun began! The girls learned about friction by experimenting with wheels on different surfaces, and studied various optical illusions, trying to figure out how they work! They also tried to make a paper clip float in a bowl of water, and one of our Scouts, Chloe, was the only one who could make it float several times! This even surprised the engineers. The girls then learned that there is acid in soda (yuck!) and they made their own version of flubber! Finally, the Scouts measured their heartbeats at rest, and then again after “jumping around” in true Badger spirit.
What a great experience for our girls! They were able to travel to a top-notch university, earn 3 science badges, and have a blast in the process!

Forty-five St. Mary Girl Scouts marched in the Menomonee Falls Christmas Parade on Sunday. Following the parade theme of Bows, Lights, and Ornaments, our girls each carried a red bow and looked very festive in the process! All of our Daisy Scouts, and some of our older girls, rode in style, waving from their coveted seat on the sleigh that Mr. Patterson made for us last year.
Many of the parents and leaders were happy that the weather cooperated, as it was one of the warmer Christmas parades we have marched in during recent years. It is a long-standing tradition to have the St. Mary Girl Scouts march in this parade, and it is always a highlight to hear our parishioners and school families shouting “YEAH ST. MARY!” from the sidewalks! We are so proud of our school, and are happy to march thru the streets of our community, letting everyone know!

As part of the Spanish Curriculum the students at St. Mary’s are learning “Buenos modales” - good manners to practice when someone from another culture offers us a new food.
The 8th Grade Spanish classes had a food tasting and tried:
- Mexican hot chocolate (it has a little bit of cinnamon)
- Platanos fritos - fried green plantation chips (a little like potato chips)
- Guava paste - a gellied sweet made with guava fruit
Our students are learning ways to apply their foreign language knowledge in real world settings.
They are also discovering that learning can be tasty too!

St. Mary’s students, in support of Operation Christmas Child’s shoebox ministry, filled 130 shoeboxes with small toys, hard candy, stuffed animals, and hygiene items, hoping to brighten Christmas for children around the globe.
Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God's love. This program provides an opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in a simple, hands—on missions project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus Christ.
The boxes collected by our students were presented at the altar of last Wednesday’s liturgy, where they were blessed by Fr. Greg, and a prayer was said for the children who will be receiving them. Student, teacher and parent volunteers delivered the boxes to the Samaritan’s Purse collection site.
Once again, our students demonstrate their mission to live with “hearts on fire” demonstrating the compassion of Jesus by sharing with those who need help the most.

“Don’t Monkey Around With Drugs,” and “Make Good Choices,” were some of the class messages chanted during the assembly held Friday, Nov. 16, marking the end of Red Ribbon Week for St. Mary’s students.
“Life’s a Kick – Drug-Free,” the theme of the week, mixed serious messages with fun activities. “Don’t Let Drugs Twist Your Life” hand-outs were presented to classrooms on a day that students sported mix-match clothing.
Class messages were written and incorporated into sidewalk chalk drawings, where their message could be shared with all students on the playground.
Red tulips were planted along the front of the school by all classrooms, and will provide a reminder of the Red Ribbon Week message when they appear next spring.
And “Life’s a Kick Drug Free” was the theme for Friday’s assembly. Students dressed in red, listened to a message delivered by Officer Kirchberger, announced their class messages and select students participated in a soccer kick contest, with winners receiving a miniature soccer ball.

These are but a brief sampling of the novel learning experiences students in grades 6, 7, and 8, have taken part in during the Friday Activity Period.
If you wander the school building from 2:10 until 3:00 each Friday, you will find almost 100 very involved students. Some are building a pyramid on the second floor. Others are learning yoga poses in the conference room. At one end of the science lab, a third group is practicing how to use different tips create shells, flowers, and writing, to decorate cakes. At the other end of the lab, the hum of sewing machines can be heard, as students learn everything from reading a pattern to creating a pair of pajama bottoms. The first issue of the newspaper is slated for press in December, as students practice reporting, editing, and laying out a newspaper. Computer animation has stick figures doing amazing antics across the monitor screen. Harmonies waft down from the third floor choir. Primary children are being taught new "learning games" on first floor. And the Activity Center is full of students play novel interactive games, like "ghost volleyball".
What a wonderful opportunity to try a new activity, in a "non graded", stress free environment! Who knows what new hobbies - or lifelong passions - will result from these experiences. As several students related, "I just love getting to pick what I want to do. It's so much fun - and I'm learning a lot. It's like a taste of high school."

As part of their service project this year, the 6th graders are asking that everyone in our school help them in collecting food to fill the shelves at the Menomonee Falls Food Pantry.
During the month of October the 1st and 8th grade students were asked to help kick off the collection. Their combined efforts brought in a total of 168 items, weighing 116 pounds.

The 2008 St. Mary Family Fun Fair is scheduled for Friday, February 1, from 5 to 9 p.m.
Join with the St. Mary community as we celebrate the U. S. A. with food, fun and fellowship. Chase away the winter doldrums with a trip down the inflatable slide or a round of cake walk!
All are welcome to this FREE admission carnival.
This annual community-building event is sponsored by St. Mary’s Home and School Association, and is planned by the 1st Grade Families. It is a wonderful opportunity for members of the community to gather together for fellowship and fun.
In addition to attending the festivities, you have the opportunity to shine as a Fun Fair ‘STAR.’ Through this sponsorship program, you or your business will be recognized on our event night ‘Wall of Fame,’ as well as in our fair booklet and marketing materials. While the weather has been getting cool for a while, it still seems like school just began. Yet we’re facing first quarter report cards and conferences already! Yikes!
With today’s technology there aren’t many big surprises on report cards (we can check out the grades on the web all too often for the kids liking) but it can be an anxious time nonetheless. St. Mary’s is a school filled with talented kids and at some point every parent worries about how their children will measure up. Thank heavens we’ve got such great teachers who work closely with all our kids so that they all blossom to their full potential!

St. Mary's Girl Scout Brownie Troop 2866 collected, cleaned and donated 130 coats for TV-6's Condella's Coats for Kids.
More Wisconsin kids can stay warm this winter thanks to these wonderful young ladies and all the families who donated coats.

On Wednesday, October 31st four alumni of St. Mary's Class of 2005 were inducted into the National Honor Society at Germantown High School.
Not only did they have to meet a minimum grade point average, applicants were also selected based on their character, leadership qualities and service to the community. Teachers and current NHS members also provided input during the selection process.

We have a great tradition at St. Mary’s on All Saints Day. The 3rd grade students research their chosen saints and dress in saintly costumes for the all-school Mass. It is great fun for all the students and parents to see these kids decked out in long white beards and flowing gowns.
Congrats to our 3rd graders for leading such a saintly procession for the whole community to enjoy!
