It's one thing being human but another being important.
So we have two things, being human and being important. One becomes human on being born. At that time, a helpless human being. Generally we tend to become important as we become less helpless, so one of our objectives is to become less helpless.
As we do this, we also become more helpful. Some, for one reason or many reasons tend to remain more on the helpless side than on the important side.
As we develop more fully into human individuals we tend to catch up and become more helpful to ourselves and to others. We must not forget being helpful to others, because this is part of the process.
Becoming important is not merely a process of of developing as an individual but that of integration and socialization. Therefore, in the case of the individual, it is first of all a process of understanding one's self and one's needs.
It is also a process of the adjustments that we make to the various social structures that become part of us and as we become part of them.
How the individual adjusts to the group while becoming a part of the group is the more significant part of becoming important. The question then becomes, how does one become essential to the group and remain significant to one's self?
When both aspects of this process are successful, one can judge oneself to be important. Society however, overall and in individual situations tends to fail in providing all of the needs of the individual. This primarily because the individual is an individual that relies mainly on self for supplying many individual needs.
The heads of government or the servants in government become important when they assist other members of society in becoming important.
Mothers, fathers, grandparents and teachers are important because they assist in the loving process of making others important. Becoming important then is in the assistance given others in becoming important. It is more than the process of merely growing up.
