Some Things are so Simple They're Difficult

By Tom Gehl

Some things are so simple that they become difficult.

Since the 1967 Arab/Israeli War, U.S. Presidents of both parties have been pursuing the "peace process" in the Middle East. It has become so obligatory that the actual pursuit of PEACE has become secondary.  As long as the "process" is engaged, that's all that really seems to matter.

Last week's meetings in Annapolis, Maryland reflect the latest installment of this sad reality.  There, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice presided over a series of carefully coreographed minuets, all of which were presented to a yawning world as "peace talks".

The seminal question I have always had on this matter is, "how does one seriously negotiate ANYTHING with parties that are sworn to accomplish your very death, destruction, and annihilation"?

We are in the throws of a Presidential Primary season, and wouldn't it be nice to hear a candidate, ANY candidate, say something along these lines?

To the Arabs and Palestinians:

"Look guys - all this talk of Israel having no right to exist and how you are dedicated to wiping it off the face of the earth - well, that's really not helping matters.  And my Administration won't be spending one iota of time, effort, or money to support the "process" until you can bring yourself to verbalize what the entire world already knows.  That they ARE a legitimate State and they DO have a right to exist.  We settled that question way back in 1948".

And to Israel:

"Hey man - if we can get those other guys to agree to the above, can you immediately agree to the establishment of a Palestianian State, and dedicate yourself to a meaningful plan for its implementation"?

To state that these matters are centuries old and deeply complex is to state the obvious - Middle East geo-politics is a Gordian Knot of Olympian proportions.  But plain, simple statements like the above seem to be the only real starting point.

Anything else is just so much diplomatic window dressing.

The really is no reason that there should be a Palestinian state on Israeli land.  I don't think that the so-called West Bank ever belonged to these people who call themselves Palestinians.  There NEVER was a real Palestine!  That is a name the Romans made up just to humiliate the Israelis.  The land they occupy and much more was given to them by God, taken away by men, and partially given back to them.  Jordan tossed the troublemaking "Palestinians" out of their country, and none of the other Arab (yes, they're actually Arabs) States wants them either.  Israel, particularly Ohlmert, is on a suicidal course if they give up more land.  The population boom among Muslims wherever they are is a cause for grave concern to the indiginant peoples that are the inhabitants of that State.  There is only one answer...Jesus Christ must return soon!

"There NEVER was a real Palestine!"

--There was NEVER a real Israel, either.

"That is a name the Romans made up just to humiliate the Israelis."

--Not true.  Palaestina as it was originally called is a cognate of Philistine, the INDIGENOUS people who resided in the area around Gaza, in what today is now the West Bank.

In fact, the Greek called that area Palaistina, dating all the way back to the 5th century BCE.  Herodotus wrote of a "district of Syria, called Palaistinei."

"(yes, they're actually Arabs)"

--Their roots date back to Southern Greece during the Mycenaean period. They are non-Semitic people.  We understand "Semitic" today as Jewish people, but it actually refers to a specific language group and cultural group that includes Arabs, Akkadians, Hebrew, Phonecians etc.  The people in Gaza are non-Semitic Greek descent meaning they aren't actually Arabs.

"The population boom among Muslims wherever they are is a cause for grave concern to the indiginant peoples that are the inhabitants of that State."

--If you mean indigenous instead of indignant, then I am reminded of how English settlers came to North America and bred like rabbits and overrun the "indigenous" people. Kind of hypocritical, hey?

These people lived in peace for thousands of years until British colonization caused rifts in their communities.

We can blame the British for our problems in Iraq too--they drew arbitrary nation-borders without thinking of grouping nations by culture.

"These people lived in peace for thousands of years until British colonization caused rifts in their communities."

No one has lived in peace for thousands of years.  Get real with your history.

"There was NEVER a real Israel, either."

I assume you don't believe in the Abrahanic Covenant then?  Start in Genesis 12 to see how Israel came into being.

I did mean indigenous and I wasn't one of the pilgrims or settlers so I accept no blame for that.  Today is today and the Muslims follow a doctrine of "convert or kill".  Are you ready to convert or die?

I standby my position that there NEVER was a State named Palestine, and today's Palestinians are arabs.

I do agree that the arbitrary drawing of boundaries that divided peoples such as the Kurds was very poorly conceived.  "Our" problems in Iraq were not caused by the Brits. Funny how you liberals forgot who Saddam was!

Shawn won't believe me but the above is a better thesis than either mine or Shawn's.

Here's an even better explanation.

There wasn't an Israeli state though.  If you consider that a state it's only fair to consider Palaestina a state, also.  You should always be fair in your criterion.

Oh, and thanks for the fair and balanced sources.

"Some Things are so Simple They're Difficult"

Was that the thesis of your post, Tom, or did you foresee the tenor of the comments to come?

Shawn, if you knew anything about the Abrahanic Convent you'd know that the Muslims were in Palatine praising Allah long before Abraham  Lincoln partied on the holy sea then and led the Jews back to Israel.

Get your facts straight. Read the Left Behind series and the Harley Owners Handbook before you speak.

No one loves a historical debate more than I, but I was curious to know what thoughts are regarding a way out of the PRESENT morass.  I am not saying my suggestions would WORK, as peace in that region could well be an oxymoron.  But I think they are the only logical starting point.
