Would You Stick This Up Your Nose?

Ok, so not one of my more profound titles, but it certainly catches your attention, right?

With the heat running practically 24/7 in our house, my sinuses have been killing me, which reminded me of an interesting on-line article about "neti pots" that I recently read.

Before I give you the link to the article, I have to say that:

a) I have not tried this myself; and

b) I don't think I will ever try it because it kind of grosses me out.

The neti pot is an instrument used to irrigate your nasal passages.   If you don't believe that anyone would actually do this, check out this YouTube video.

(Now, if anyone out there reading is willing to admit that they have tried this and wants to share, feel free to comment.)

That's right folks -- Here at Brookfield Wannabe we are committed to bringing you the hardhitting news  :-)

Hey, my husband (don't give me an aspirin, I'm not dead yet) is using one. Guess that makes it worth a try...

Hi Roxanne, When I was a very young boy our family physician flushed out my sinus's with a similar but different procedure. I had to swallow when he gave me a shot of water.I had really severe sinus headaches. It helped a great deal. The headaches never came back after several years of enduring them. Many germs live withing our nasal passages. Hand contact between your nose and eyes can actually cause eye infections. Really gross. Never had to have it done again, once was enough, if you know what I mean.

Hi Testosterone, done that one 5 times already, trying to get them moved a little closer together, WOW, what a trip that is, day before is worse than the exam, alternate to not at all is far worse than the exam of course. Procto not a good subject from beginning to end. Good to see the digression here from the regular subjects. Te He.

I used something like this years ago.  I had chronic rhinitis and my ENT prescribed saline nasal irrigation.     I got a small plastic irrigating tube which filled up with warm saline.  It didn't look as fancy a the neti pot but the concept was the same.

I started using a version of a neti pot after my first pregnancy.  There are a lot of medications that you can not use to help relieve allergies and colds when breastfeeding.  My physician recommended this as an alternative to suffering through colds/allergies/sinus discomfort. I found it to be so helpful, that I have continued to use it for the past three years.

If you suffer from sinus troubles, the benefits from using this (either regularly, or whenever you start to experience pain or pressure) far outweigh the *yuck* factor.

Good luck!

MOMOFTWO - I was really concerned following your first sentence as to where you were going there! Glad to see that you were discussing sinus problems. Whew!
